Thumbhole Mittens

These cute little mittens are knit from the bottom up. The thumbholes are worked on the sides of the mittens, which becomes clear when you shape the tops.

Scraps of sock yarn
Shown in red handspun superwash wool
1 US #2/2.5mm circular needles
Tapestry needle
Gauge
28 sts/40 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch
Abbreviations
EOR – end of round
K – knit
K2tog – knit two together
P – purl
Rep – repeat
Rnd – round
St – stitch
Ssk – slip, slip, knit: slip two stitches knitwise, put them back on the left needle, and knit them together through the back loop
Directions
Cuff
Cast on 32 sts. Using the Magic Loop method, join and work 10 rnds in (k2, p2) ribbing.
Hand
Work 10 rnds of stockinette st.
On next rnd: K 11 sts, bind off 3 sts for thumbhole, k to EOR.
K to thumbhole, turn.
P to thumbhole, turn.
K to thumbhole, cast on 3 sts using the backward loop method. For a video of this cast-on method, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHqMh01TEL4. Turn work to right side. Work 10 rounds of stockinette stitch.
Decreases
Rnd 1: K 12, ssk, k1, slip st to L needle, k2tog, k11, ssk, k1, slip st to L needle, k2tog.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rnd 3: K 11, ssk, k1, k2tog, k10, ssk, k1.
Rnd 4: K2tog, k to EOR.
Rnd 5: K 9, ssk, k1, k2tog, k7, ssk, k1.
Rnd 6: K2tog, k to EOR.
Rnd 7: K 7, ssk, k1, k2tog, k5, ssk, k1.
Rnd 8: K2tog, k to EOR.
Finishing
Graft mitten top sts together using kitchener stitch. Weave in ends.
