Thumbhole Mittens

These cute little mittens are knit from the bottom up. The thumbholes are worked on the sides of the mittens, which becomes clear when you shape the tops.

MATERIALS
Scraps of sock yarn
Shown in red handspun superwash wool
1 US #2/2.5mm circular needles
Tapestry needle
 
GAUGE 
28 sts/40 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch
 
ABBREVIATIONS
P – purl
K – knit
Rep – repeat
St – stitch  (Sts – stitches)
Ssk – slip, slip, knit: slip two stitches knitwise, put them back on the left needle, knit together through the back loop
K2tog – knit two together

DIRECTIONS

Cuff
Cast on 32 sts.  Using the Magic Loop method, join and work 10 rounds in K2 P2 ribbing.

Hand
Work 10 rounds of stockinette st.  Work 11 sts.  Bind off 3 sts for thumbhole.  Knit rest of round.  Knit 12 sts (to the thumbhole), turn.  Purl back around (29 sts) until you reach the thumbhole.  Turn.  Knit around (29 sts) until you reach the thumbhole.  Cast on 3 sts by turning work around and purling 3 sts, putting each one back on the left needle after it is purled.  Turn work back around to the right side.  Continue knitting around.  Work 10 rounds of stockinette.

Decreases
K 12 sts, SSK, K1, slip st around to other side, K2tog, K11, SSK, K1, slip st around to other side, K2tog.
K 1 round.
K 11 sts, SSK, K1, K2tog, K10, SSK, K1.
K2tog, K the rest of the round.
K 9 sts, SSK, K1, K2tog, K7, SSK, K1.
K2tog, K the rest of the round.
K 7 sts, SSK, K1, K2tog, K5, SSK, K1.
K2tog, K the rest of the round.

ready to go out! 

FINISHING
Graft sts from both sides of needle together using Kitchener Stitch.  Weave in ends.
